OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVER

It is a condition of your student visa that you hold valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire visa length duration in Australia. OSHC is a private health care arrangement, equivalent to Australia’s Medicare system, which helps cover the costs of medical treatments in and out of hospital, should you get sick or have an accident.

The Australian National University’s preferred health cover provider is Allianz Global Assistance. However, this arrangement does not restrict you from obtaining OSHC from a provider of your choice. A list of approved providers can be found on the Department of Health and Aging website.

If you have been studying in Australia prior to attending the ANU make sure that your OSHC is extended for the length of your new visa.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR OSHC?

You are eligible for OSHC if you are:

  1.  the holder of a student visa; or
  2. a person who is applying for a student visa

How to calculate OSHC Duration?

Higher Education Sector: Temporary Visa (Subclass 573)

Length of stay

This visa allows you to stay in Australia for the duration of your course. It permits multiple entries to Australia. Dependent family members who come with you to Australia are usually able to stay the same length of time as you, but they cannot stay once you have left the country.

Your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy must cover the full period of your visa. Your student visa can be granted up to the maximum duration outlined in the table below.

Duration of course Duration of visa
Longer than 10 months and finishing at the end of the Australian academic year (November – December) Your visa will usually be granted to March 15 of the following year.
Longer than 10 months (finishing January - October) Your visa will usually be granted for two months longer than the duration of your course.
10 months or less Your visa will usually be granted for one month longer than the duration of your course.

You need to ensure that your OSHC policy covers the entire length of your visa or your visa may only be granted until the expiry date of your OSHC.

For Example :

John has been offered a place in the Bachelors of Commerce starting from Semester 1, 2013 ( 18th February, 2013). He will be finishing his program at the end of Semester 2, 2015 (December 2015). In his case, the OSHC duration will be calulated from the beginning of the same calendar month - that is, the 01.02.2013 until 31.03.2016 (38 months) to cover the entire visa length.

In the instances where a student finishes their program early or withdraw from their studies, they are eligible to apply directly to Allianz Global Assistance for a refund of the difference in the total fee they paid and the number of months/ days of cover they used.

Postgraduate Research Sector: Temporary Visa (Subclass 574)

Length of stay

This visa allows you to stay in Australia for the duration of your course. It permits multiple entries to Australia. Dependent family members who come with you to Australia are usually able to stay the same length of time as you, but they cannot stay once you have left the country.

Your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy must cover the full period of your visa. Your student visa can be granted up to the maximum duration outlined in the table below.

Duration of course Duration of visa
Longer than 10 months and finishing at the end of the Australian academic year (November – December) Your visa will usually be granted until 15 September of the following year. This is to allow an extra six months from 15 March (which is the normal expiry date for student visas granted under these circumstances) for the purpose of interactive marking of a thesis.
Longer than 10 months (finishing January – October) Your visa will usually be granted for eight months longer than the duration of your course. This is to allow an extra six months (on top of the two months that is normally granted for a student visa) for the purpose of interactive marking of a thesis.
10 months or less Your visa will usually be granted for seven months longer than the duration of your course. This is to allow an extra six months (on top of the one month that is normally granted for a student visa) for the purpose of interactive marking of a thesis.

You need to ensure that your OSHC policy covers the entire length of your visa or your visa may only be granted until the expiry date of your OSHC.

For Example:

Emily has been offered a PhD candidature in Earth Sciences starting from 15th January, 2013. She will be finishing her program in 14th January, 2017. As she is an HDR student, her visa will cover up to 1 month before the commencement of studies (15th December, 2012), 2 months after the course finishes, plus an additional 6 months to cover the evaluation of thesis. Emily's OSHC duration will be calculated from 01.01.2013 until 30.09.2017 (57 months). Note that if Emily decided to change her commencement date to the 1st of January 2013, her OSHC start date would be calculated from beginning of the previous calendar month - that is, the 01.12.2012.

In the instances where a student finishes their program early or withdraw from their studies, they are eligible to apply directly to Allianz Global Assistance for a refund of the difference in the total fee they paid and the number of months/ days of cover they used.

Travelling to Australia with Family?

A spouse or legally recognised de facto partner and/or dependent children of a student will be covered by OSHC as long as the policy is for family cover.

Holding health insurance in your home country does not exempt you from the obligation of having OSHC. Only the citizens of the following countries are exempt from obtaining OSHC as they have a special inter-governmental arrangement with Australia:

  1. Norwegian students are covered by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme
  2. Swedish students who are covered by CSN International (the Swedish National Board of Student Aid) or Kammarkollegiet (the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administration Agency)
  3. Belgian students covered by Belgian Government Insurance Scheme
  4. New Zealand citizens not on a student visa and have entitlements under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement between New Zealand and Australia
