What is OSHC?
OSHC is health insurance that provides cover for the costs of medical and hospital care which international students may need while in Australia. OSHC will also pay for most prescription drugs, other medical services such as radiology and pathology and emergency ambulance transport.

Why do I need OSHC?
- International studenst are not eligible for Medicare, the Australian government's public health insurance system.
- In addition, it is your student visa or AusAID defence visa condition (Condition 8501) that you and your dependants (family members who hold dependant visa) must have adequate health cover during your time in Australia.
- Students without current OSHC are in breach of their visa condition. You are risk having your student visa cancalled by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

What does OSHC cover?
Out of Hospital Services
- Most general practitioner services are covered by your OSHC. Benefit amount is 100% as listed in the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).
- Pathology and radiology services. Benefit amount is 85% as listed in MBS.
In Hospital Services - Public Hospitals
Medical services such as same day services, accident and emergency and outpatient medical and post-operative services provided by a public hospital is 100% covered. Hospitalisation cost in a public hospital is 100% on the condition that the patient admitted in shared ward hospital accommodation. Benefit amount (Schedule fee) is 100% as determined by State and Territory health authorities for services charged to a non Australian resident.
In Hospital Services - Private Hospitals
OSHC will contribute benefits towards treatment and shared ward accommodation. However, you may have to pay for any difference between the charges and the schedule fee.
Emergency Ambulance Transport
You are covered for 100% of the ambulance transportation charge:
- When the services are medically necessary for admission to hospital OR
- For emergency treatment.
Non emergency use is not covered.
Prescription Medicines
You are covered for prescription only if the medicines are prescribed and dispensed by a registered practitioner.
Your OSHC will pay expenses exceeding the current Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) patient contribution ($30.70) up to $50.00 per prescription item. The maximum benefit payable per calendar year is $300.00 for Single plan and $600.00 for Family plan.

Your standard OSHC does not pay for services provided by
- physiotherapists
- osteopaths
- chiropractors
- naturopaths
- dentist
- optician
- any other ancillary services

How do I make a claim?

- Click Here and login to your personal account. Follow the step by step instructions to submit a claim.
- Record the claim reference number at the submission of the onilne claim, and write it on the back of all your original invoices and/or receipts.

How do I upgrade my OSHC to Family plan?
- If you are an AusAID sponsored student, please do not use the form in this page. Please contact your AusAID Liaison Officer .
- To upgrade your Single OSHC to Family plan, please complete the OSHC Family Upgrade form. Click Here

What should I do if I need to have surgery?
If you have been referred to hospital to undergo surgery, you may seek hospital guarantees. With hospital guarantees, OSHC Worldcare will
- Confirm your cover
- Liaise your doctor and/or specialist and the admitting hospital to organise for your accounts to be sent directly to OSHC Worldcare
- Advise you of any charges you may have to pay.

I am travelling out of Australia, can I suspend my membership?
If you leave Australia for more than 30 days, you can apply to have your membership extended for the period you were away. These additional days will be added to the end of your policy date. Your cover must be valid upon application for an extension and you must provide evidence of exit from, and entry into Australia.
In order to apply for leave of absence (holiday credit):
- You must have current OSHC. If your policy expired during your absence, you must renew your cover and backdate to the date of expiry before you can apply for your holiday credit.
- Download Form. Complete the form and attach evidence of exit from, and entry into Australia.

How can I get a refund?
You can apply for a refund (part or full) of your premium if:
- you paid for OSHC and did not come to Australia to commence your studies
- your student visa was not extended or was cancelled
- you have to cease studies and leave Australia before the end of a period of approved stay for reasons beyond your control
- you finish your studies early and are leaving Australia
- you have been granted permanent resident status in Australia
OSHC Worldcare will not refund premiums for periods of less than one month.
