Going Home Checklist

 

8 Weeks
  • Book your flights home.  If you are attending the Graduation ceremony, check the date before booking your ticket
  • Obtain quotes from freight companies to ship possessions home.  Make sure you ask about insurance. The following Web sites may be useful:
    http://www.jetta.com.au , http://www.tnt.com.au,  www.seven-seas.com.au
  • Start a file for records/receipts that maybe needed when you get home (eg tax)
  • Check the Career Hub web site for workshops about planning your resume and your future career path
  • Gather information for your resume for eg: Collect personal and work references, Approach lecturers/employers for references, Update contact details
  • If you have children, notify the school or childcare of when you are leaving and any administrative paperwork that needs to be done
7 Weeks
  • Organise to collect a copy of medical records to take home. 
  • Go through your possessions and decide what you want to take home, sell or give away to charity (e.g Salvation Army, St. Vincent De Paul, friends etc)
6 Weeks
  • Clear any debts or penalties (library)
  • Collect or buy boxes for packing
  • Cancel subscriptions or memberships you no longer require (eg email accounts)
5 Weeks
  • Provide your agent/landlord/Hall/College – with written notification of the date you will vacate the premise.
  • Arrange a time for a household inspection so you can collect any bond owed to you prior to leaving
  • Advertise your car for sale
  • Tell family/friends/sponsor/employer the date and time you will be arriving home
4 Weeks
  • Notify everyone of your new address (i.e.  Universities, banks, subscriptions)
  • Arrange to collect your academic transcripts or for them to be sent home
  • Lodge a tax return form, if you have been working part-time.  Contact the Australian Taxation Office 
3 Weeks
  • Organise a farewell party with your friends
  • If you have houseplants start looking for a new home for them
  • Find out the contact details for your local Alumni chapter in your home country
2 Weeks
  • Contact your bank and arrange to close or transfer your bank account, organise travellers’ cheques or currency exchange, so you have cash you will need for now and for the trip home
  • Book cleaners or arrange with the agent or landlord about cleaning your house after you have vacated the property
1 Week
  • Update your home address on ISIS; if you are not attending Graduation make sure the university knows where to send your testamur
  • Back up your computer files
  • Contact Utilities to arrange the disconnection of services and final accounts
  • Clean out your fridge, freezer, stove, oven, blinds, exhaust fans etc
  • Confirm your travel plans (flight, accommodation etc)
  • Freight company should arrive preferably the day before you leave
Moving Day
  • Turn off appliances and hot water service.  Lock all doors and windows, and drop the keys off to your agent/landlord.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the airport
