How to ensure satisfactory Academic Progress

Successful students do the following as a minimum:

  • Attend all Lectures
  • Attend all Tutorials
  • Prepare for Tutorials and Lectures by reading all your material
  • Submit assignments on time
  • For every hour of contact e.g. Lectures and tutorials you should do 3 hours of study
  • 12 hours of class per week actually translates as 36 hours a week of study. To put this into perspective, try studying from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. This will leave your weekends and evenings free to rest, socialise, have fun and maybe do some part time work.

Successful students also seek help often:

It is important to keep in regular contact with your Lecturers:

  • Ask them questions; let them know if you need help with any particular subjects
  • Let them know if you are unwell or if you have any personal problems that are effecting your studies

What is ‘Unsatisfactory Academic Progress’?

Repeated failure in a course

If a student in an undergraduate award program fails a course twice, the student must obtain approval from the Course Authority to be allowed to enrol in that course again. In some cases students may be refused permission to attempt a course for the third time. For core subjects, this may result in you not being able to complete your preferred Program.

Failure to maintain satisfactory Academic Progress

A student who fails more than 50% of Courses attempted in a Semester will be considered to have unsatisfactory Academic Progress. Students who have unsatisfactory Academic Progress for the first time will be placed on Probation. Students who have unsatisfactory Academic Progress for the second time in the same Program will be asked to “Show Cause” or demonstrate why they should be allowed to continue in their current Program.

International students who have been excluded from their Program will be reported to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship , this may result in you having to enrol in a different program or a different University or even having your student visa revoked and being sent home.
