Self Guided Walking Tour

Let The Journey Begin at ANU

  1. Start at the IEO (International Education Office), the most important and resourceful place for an international student. We provide lots of information to aid in settling into Canberra and the ANU. We are here to help with services such as health cover, visa, various holidays and trips, welcome lunch and dinner, campus tours, meeting other students and many more.  Lower Ground Floor, Pauline Griffin Building (Facing the oval/field)
  2. From the IEO, walk out of the main entrance and turn right towards  Melville Hall. At the corner of the building, turn right again. You will see the Academic Skills and Learning Centre ,on your right before the flight of stairs. Here, you can obtain help and general feedback on your essays and reports, attend seminars and talks such as time management,essay writing and referencing and help on Honours.   3. From ASLC, walk upstairs to SAS (Students Administration Services). This is the place where all the students’ administration matters are dealt with. You can obtain information about your fees and enrolments or obtain official academic transcripts. Ground Floor, Pauline Griffin Building (Facing Ellery Crescent)
  4. Now go back to the IEO entrance and walk in a north-west direction to Union Court. Here you will find the Co-op Bookshop, banks, cafes, STA travel, a chemist, post office, newsagent and much more. Concessions & Student facilities Building (Facing Union Court)
  5. Walk up to the 1st floor of the Concession Building (above Commonwealth Bank), and you will find the Undergraduate Students’ Association. Here, you are provided with student support services including legal and welfare advice. You can use their kitchen and find out about clubs and societies.  Concessions & Student facilities Building
  6. From Union Court walk northwards, across the bridge, over the creek and turn right along North Road. The first building on your right is the University Health Service and Counselling Center., These services are free for students. 
  7. The next building on your left is the Sports and Recreation Centre. This is where you: will find the gymnasium, can obtain contact details for the many sporting and recreational clubs; can hire tennis courts, etc. They offer various classes too, so get in and get fit. The café next door, The Purple Pickle, is recommended for its good food and coffee! 

The journey continues to the city centre (CIVIC)

  1. From Sports and Recreation Centre, walk back towards Union Court, walking eastwards along University Avenue. Cross Childers St. at the Street Theatre, which also has a café. Walk up this street, University Avenue- the Canberra School of Music is on your right. On your left will be  UniLodge, then the City West Bus Interchange
  2. From the City West Bus Interchange, cross Marcus Clarke Street, walk along University Avenue until you reach  London Circuit. The Canberra Law Courts are now in front of you. Turn right onto London Circuit until you reach the bus stop. The Police station is right across the road.
  3. Turn left into West Row from London Circuit and keep walking until you reach Alinga Street. You will see the  Post Office directly across the road, with a clock tower. Cross the road and go to the corner of the Post Office and you will see some post boxes. Walk along Alinga Street, towards Civic, or eastwards. You will reach Northbourne Avenue. Turn left along Northbourne Avenue and walk only a few hundred metres, and just before the hotel  Novotel, you will see the entrance to the Jolimont Bus Centre. This is where you will go to board or book interstate bus trips to most parts of Australia. 
  4. Go back to the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street, and cross over Northbourne Avenue (at the traffic lights) towards Civic, or eastwards. To your right, along Northbourne Avenue is the Student Flights travel agent. As you enter the Civic pedestrian mall, on your left will be another travel agent called, “Flight Centre”. 
  5. Ahead, you will see the Civic Bus Interchange, with nine different bus platforms. Go to Bus Platform number 1 (on Mort Street), located in front of a number of shops. You will see the South Pacific Rugby Club. Walking along to your right, you will find the Action Bus information Centre in Bailey’s Arcade. This is where you can pick-up free timetables for the local bus service. However, bus tickets can be purchased from any newsagency
  6. Walk southwards along Mort Street, and shortly you will get to London Circuit again. Keep walking until you reach Ainslie Avenue. Turn right. At number 28 Ainslie Avenue you will find the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in a building called, Ethos House.
  7. Keep walking along Ainslie Avenue, in a North-easterly direction, towards the pedestrian mall. There will be a water fountain in front of you, and the Canberra Centre in front of the fountain. Walk to the main entrance of the Canberra Centre, enter the building and walk straight through to the other side (don’t turn left or right while in the Centre). After exiting, you will be in Bunda Street. Cross the road and walk to the mall, this is where you will find the supermarket, “ALDI” on the left and some small specialty shops selling: fruit and vegetables; bread; meats, etc. 

You have now completed the Self-Guided Walking Tour. You can walk westwards to return to the ANU campus. Look for the Telstra Tower on top of Black Mountain to know you’re walking in the right direction.
