Public Transport

GETTING AROUND ANU BY BUS

Did you know that catching a bus is usually CHEAPER than driving? It also gives you the opportunity to exercise by walking to and from the bus stop, time to think and do your readings and no parking stress.

ACTION Buses

ACTION buses provide reliable public transport throughout Canberra. The buses are clean, safe, well maintained and run on time. You can transfer between buses for free within an hour of ticket validation. There are many direct bus routes servicing the campus. Some bus routes take a longer time, so you need to check the timetable and plan your trip. Remember to always show your ANU student card to receive a concession ticket. A weekly concession ticket will cost around $12.30, this allows you to travel as much as you like for the whole week – great value!

The main Civic bus interchange is a 10min walk from the ANU campus. Bus 34 travels from Belconnen, through the ANU campus, through the Civic shopping area and then onto the Woden town centre.

UniSafe Bus

In the evening during semester, the UniSafe bus can take you around campus, to Civic, and to Fenner Hall. You can use it at night to get to Civic to catch another bus.

GETTING AROUND ANU BY BICYCLE

Why cycle?

After walking, cycling is by far the cheapest, healthiest and most environmentally friendly way to get to ANU. It is also great fun!
The ease of bicycle ‘parking’ and the many cycle paths around Canberra make cycling faster and more convenient over short distances than either buses or cars.

Rides of 10km take only 30–40 minutes of slow pedaling so, even if you are not a keen athlete, cycling is a great option to get from ANU to Civic or to any of the suburbs in the Inner North or Inner South of Canberra

Showers, Change Rooms and Lockers

Showers, change rooms and lockers are available at the ANU Sport and Recreation Association  . Yearly lockers are available for $60, and are reallocated every March — ask at reception. Chifley Library also has free lockers for postgraduate and honors students, and in April remaining lockers are available for undergraduate students — just ask at the information desk. Most buildings have at least one shower and change room available for staff and student use, so ask your local administrators if there are facilities you can use, or email transport for further information.

Maps

Canberra is the perfect city for cycling and has many practical and scenic bicycle paths and cycle lanes. The Canberra Street Directory is useful, however it doesn't show all cycle routes or on-road cycle lanes. You can buy a detailed cycling map from most newsagents or find it online here

Bike N Ride

An easy way to get from ANU to Canberra’s main town centers is to take your bike on the bus. ACTION buses are now equipped with bike racks for all Intertown routes. This lets you take the bus from Civic to Gungahlin, Belconnen, Woden or Tuggeranong and then cycle around the town. Each bike rack can hold two bicycles and each bicycle can be loaded or unloaded without affecting the other. And best of all … using a bike rack is free.

Buying a bike

Second-hand bicycles can be purchased for as little as $30, with more recent models starting at $200. Check out the ANU Billboard, campus notice board ads and Canberra newspaper classifieds.

The ReCYCLEry on the ANU campus offers a great deal for second hand bikes. They sell recently repaired bikes for $60.

Lights, Locks and Helmets

Subsidised lights, locks and helmets can be purchased from ANUgreen during office hours. ANUgreen is located in the John Yencken Building on Sullivans Creek Road.

It is ACT law that all cyclists must wear a helmet and all bicycles are equipped with lights when being ridden at night.

WALKING AROUND ANU

ANU is a beautiful place to walk around, and walking is the most popular way of travelling around the campus. If you catch a bus to Civic Interchange it's a 10 minute walk to the University unless you catch the UniSafe bus at night or transfer to an ACTION bus coming to campus. If you live close to ANU, walking is also a commuting option.

Safety and security

When travelling around campus at night, be sure to use the lighted pathways. The UniSafe Bus operates during the semester between 5.15pm and 11.03pm, and travels across campus, through Turner, to Fenner Hall and then Civic every 40 minutes.

UNISAFEGAURD Patrols can accompany you anywhere around campus, such as to bus stops, car parks and between buildings and residences. Just call 52249 to request an escort and for all other security matters.
