Graduate Research in Statistics - Overview
Graduate Research in Statistics at ANU brings together diverse groups of statisticians to provide a range of challenging opportunities for graduate students. The environment is further enriched by the close links maintained between the University and statisticians in Commonwealth institutions, including the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics, the Federal Office of Road Safety and the Biometry Section at the CSIRO.
The expertise of academic staff throughout the University is available to students, including the staff of the School of Finance & Applied Statistics in the College of Business and Economics, the Centre for Mathematics and its Applications in the Mathematical Sciences Institute, and interested academic staff of other groups such as the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH), and Demography.
The ANU provides an excellent intellectual and physical environment for research and research training. It has a worldwide reputation for high-quality research in statistics and econometrics. The University in general and the Statistics groups in particular are well equipped with state-of-the-art computing equipment, which is used to run modern statistical software. The Faculty members have a wide range of interests and are an active part of the statistical community.
Graduate Research in Statistics offer the opportunity for appropriately qualified candidates to expand their knowledge of and/or to develop research level expertise in statistics. The general aim of the Master of Applied Statistics and Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics coursework degrees is to provide instruction in subject areas that will enhance the professional expertise of suitably qualified graduates who are or want to be engaged in work of a quantitative or statistical nature. The Master of Actuarial Studies, Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Studies and Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Techniques were offered for the first time in 2001. In addition, the Graduate Certificate in Business Statistics offers introductory training in quantitative thinking, particularly designed for individuals working in managerial or business planning and forecasting. The Master of Philosophy degree can be obtained by completing research and a thesis. The PhD program is intended to develop skills and experience required to undertake advanced research in statistics through the writing of a thesis based on substantial research.
