Graduate Studies in Music - Graduate Diploma in Music

 

This program is designed for students wishing to pursue more advanced musical studies, or who wish to develop skills and knowledge in a related area of music study or to qualify for admission to a higher degree. The program is normally completed in one academic year (i.e. 2 semesters or 38 weeks) full-time or the equivalent part-time. Students may commence studies at the beginning of the first or the second semester of the academic year except when enrolling in Pedagogy, which must commence first semester.

Fields of Study

Performance only
or
Performance and Research project:
Offered in Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Keyboard, Guitar, Harp, Voice. Students may specialise in solo performance, chamber music, vocal ensemble or accompaniment.
Musicology: by coursework and research project. Introduces students to a diverse range of subject areas and methodologies, including archival research in Australian music using the national collections.
Jazz Performance: specialising in either solo performance or jazz ensemble, together with transcriptions and analysis.
Jazz Arranging and Composition: composing and arranging for small and large ensembles, together with transcriptions and analysis.
Pedagogy (Aural/Music Theory): by coursework and research project, primarily for practising teachers who wish to upgrade their skills in music as applied in the classroom or aural/theory studio.
Accompaniment: a structured program of accompaniment in instrumental and vocal studies, together with a study of European languages for singers and chor repetition.

Admission criteria
For admission, account is taken of the nature and level of previous tertiary studies, and/or relevant professional experience, and the applicant's motivation and objectives in undertaking the program. Students are normally expected to audition, where relevant, and be interviewed in person at the School of Music. For overseas and interstate applicants, a high quality audio/video recording and/or folio of work may be considered as a provisional audition.

Attendance
All students are expected to attend lessons and classes as required within each field of study and fully participate in Graduate Seminar throughout their enrolment in the program. The School normally has residential requirements.

Students will qualify for the diploma by completing courses to the value of 48 units. To be eligible for the award a candidate must pass in all sections of the program. The overall assessment for a successful candidate will be graded as 'Awarded the Diploma with Distinction', 'Awarded the Diploma with Merit', or 'Awarded the Diploma'.
