East Asian Studies - Overview

East Asian Studies scholars at the ANU promote the advanced study of China, Japan, Korea and contiguous areas. The ANU has the largest and most diverse community of scholars working on East Asia in the Southern Hemisphere and its library holdings, together with those of the nearby National Library, rank high among the world's leading collections of material on China, Japan and Korea.

Degrees offered in East Asian Studies range from the Graduate Diploma through coursework/research-based Masters to PhD degrees.

One of the characteristics of the ANU graduate degree is its emphasis on research. Instead of a regular, compulsory coursework regime the MPhil (Masters by research-only) and PhD degrees are designed so that students may undertake coursework, if deemed advisable, but are generally free to devote their energies to pure research relevant to their interests and the requirements of their dissertation. Another strength, especially at the PhD level, is that students are regarded by members of the academic staff as colleagues engaged in valued and ground-breaking research. As a result while close support and guidance is readily available, the atmosphere is collegial rather than didactic and impersonal.
