Graduate Research in Anthropology - Degrees

PhD

The PhD degree is by research and thesis, to a maximum length of 100,000 words.

Students with a Master by research in Anthropology from a recognised university, or with a high honours degree in Anthropology from a recognised university who have demonstrated their capacity to undertake PhD research, are generally admitted directly to the PhD course.

Students from non-English-speaking backgrounds and students who are deemed to require further formal training in anthropology, may be required to complete a year of 'necessary adjunct' coursework before taking up the full PhD program.

Recommendations for PhD scholarships and admission to the course will be based both on criteria of merit, as manifested by academic performance, relevant experience and quality of the proposed research, and on the accommodation of students' research interests, areas, and projects with those of staff members within the two departments.

MPhil

Entry requires a minimum 2A honours degree in anthropology. The two year course is examined by a thesis of a maximum of 60,000 words. Fieldwork is not usual for this degree, as there is insufficient time for adequate field research.

Consideration of Applications

All applications are considered by a Board of Studies composed of members of academic staff of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology in the Faculties and the Department of Anthropology in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies and associated programs and centres.
