Understanding Populations and Society
Presenter: Professor Peter McDonald
ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences
Venue: Fellows Room
Synopsis: The past, present and future of populations of the world, of countries and other local communities has fascinated me for 40 years. It has been said (by Auguste Comte, the founder of modern sociology) that demography is destiny. In contrast with this, the modern study of population sees demography not as an exogenous force that determines the destinies of societies but that it is the organisation of society that determines demography. Nevertheless, past demography can have an influence that lasts for many decades. The ageing of the Australian population between 2020 and 2040 has its origins not only in falls in birth and death rates in the past 30 years but also in the relative numbers of births in the 1930s and 1940s compared with the 1950s and 1960s. Thus, future ageing has a 100-year history. In the talk, I shall elaborate on these stories and on others such as the massive rise of world population in the past 250 years and the implications of very low fertility rates in many countries today.
