Occupational strains remains a significant hazard for the University.  The availability of functional voice-activated word processing technology for the PC environment at a reasonable price makes such technology an important tool in combating the occupational strains problem for susceptible individuals.

It is recommended that all Deans \ Directors have this technology available through the IT services of their Area for the use of individual employees found to require this support by the Rehabilitation and Workers' Compensation Unit.

The recommended product is Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional edition, version 5, Australian edition.  The recommended PC specification is given at http://www.voicerecognition.com.au and, most importantly, includes 256 MB RAM and a 600 MHz or faster processor.  The software is compatible with Windows 98 ME, 2000 operating systems.  The local agent for the software and specialist training is Australia's Voice Recognition Professionals at the above website.

Windows 2000 is the recommended operating system but the software does operate on Windows 98 ME and NTSP6.  The recommended sound card is the Sound-blaster Live or a digital microphone (without soundcard) can be used.
