Lecture to shed light on sustainable agriculture

The National Europe Centre at the Australian National University in association with the Delegation of the European Commission to Australia and New Zealand will present a free public lecture by Mr Silva Rodriguez, Director General, Agriculture Directorate-General of the European Commission.

Mr Rodriguez's lecture, the second of the popular ANU public lecture series, sponsored this year by Toyota, will focus on policies for sustainable agriculture and rural development.

Mr Rodriguez will share a European perspective of experience and discuss policy possibilities in developmental and environmental contexts.

"Sustainable agriculture and rural development are significant policy issues for Australia and Europe alike," Mr Rodriguez said.

Mr Rodriguez's previous professional experience includes being an inspector in the Ministry of Economy and Trade (Madrid), Counsellor in Agricultural Affairs in the State Department (Madrid), a professor at the School of Agricultural Engineers in Madrid as well as having worked in the private sector in export companies.

Mr Rodriguez's current position is as Director General, Agriculture Directorate-General of the European Commission whose role is to ensure that the European Union can attain its goal of an ever-closer union of its members. One of the principal tasks is to secure the free movement of goods, services, capital and persons throughout the territory of the Union. (www.europa.eu.int)

In 1999, Australia's total merchandise trade with the European Union (EU) was worth $33.9 billion and this exceeded two-way trade with any individual market. It includes bilateral trade of $9.1 billion with the UK, $7.1 billion with Germany and $4.3 billion with Italy.

Australian merchandise exports to the EU in 1999 accounted for $10.8 billion. This represented a 12 per cent reduction on 1998 and, in 1999, accounted for 12.5 per cent of Australia's total merchandise exports. In 1999, merchandise imports from the EU totalled $23 billion. (www.dfat.gov.au)
