Pre-Enrolment Advice Day: jumping the First Year Hump
Staff at The Australian National University will be working hard at this
year's Pre-enrolment Advice Day to help students overcome the transition
from school to university - known as the First Year Hump - by making informed
choices about the courses they will study.
The ANU is the only University to hold an annual Pre-Enrolment Advice
Day (PEA Day). "The results of poor choices at the enrolment stage
are unhappy students, an increased possibility of failure rates in individual
subjects, a higher HECS debt or dropping out of a course altogether,"
Director of Student Recruitment, Tim Beckett said.
"PEA day also helps to de-mystify the enrolment process and university
administration. Some school leavers still haven't made up their minds
and some have received UAI scores they didn't anticipate, so pre-enrolment
advice can widen or narrow down the options to assist students with decision-making."
"At PEA Day students can also formally accept their offers, talk
about what their first year timetable will look like and get to know the
campus."
New students have the opportunity to visit the campus, make contacts
and discuss and plan their courses with professional assistance. Career
advisers, academic staff and experienced tertiary students will be on
hand at the ANU next Monday 21 January, to offer up-to-date, free advice.
There will also be social activities; BBQ'S, campus tours, introductions
to sporting clubs and other fun events for students and their families.
