Omar Rayo: The Odyssey of Equilibrium

The Australian National University's Drill Hall Gallery will host the first Australian exhibition of internationally renowned Colombian artist Omar Rayo.

Omar Rayo: The Odyssey of Equilibrium, presented in conjunction with the Embassy of Colombia, offers a rare opportunity to see the work of one of Colombia's most respected senior artists, whose works have been collected by major art institutions in South America, Europe, Japan and the US.

Rayo draws on the strong history of geometric abstraction in Latin America. His work is a dialogue between the real and illusionary volumes that he creates with folding forms, bands of colour and shading. Rayo interweaves robust strips of colour in his paintings to achieve a trompe l'œil effect. His geometric forms emerge from the canvas, pulling left and right, folding over each other and themselves, drawing the audience inwards and creating a three-dimensional space within the work. Focusing on the creation of these illusionary spaces, Rayo presents a unique visual language that explores the relationship between bold areas of colour and black and white.

H.E. Mr Juan Santiago Uribe, Ambassador of Colombia, will officially open the exhibition Omar Rayo: The Odyssey of Equilibrium on Thursday 14 March 2002 at 6pm at The Australian National University Drill Hall Gallery. The exhibition has toured Tokyo and Beijing and will continue at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery until 14 April 2002. Omar Rayo, who lives and works in New York, will attend the opening courtesy of the Colombian Government.

The Rayo exhibition continues the Drill Hall Gallery's Latin American art program this year in support of the ANU Humanities Research Centre's focus on the region.

The Drill Hall Gallery is located on Kingsley Street (off Barry Drive) at The Australian National University, Canberra, and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12 noon to 5pm. Admission is free.
