18 new regional scholarships for school leavers
18 new Regional Arts Scholarships- the first of their type at the University
- will attract talented students from the regional parts of Victoria,
New South Wales and the ACT to the ANU.
The Regional Arts Scholarships will enable students to live in a hall
of residence for their first year and to major in any of the 38 disciplines
on offer in the ANU Faculty of Arts. Toshiba Australia will fund six of
the 18 Regional Arts Scholarships for 2003 to the value of $15,000.
The new scholarships will be announced today by the Vice Chancellor,
Professor Ian Chubb, at a gathering of 550 visiting students from the
ACT and surrounding region and Sydney. The students are at the ANU for
Explore Arts Day, discovering the range and flexibility of degree programs
and courses in the Faculty of Arts. Last Friday, 550 students from Victoria
and NSW enjoyed a similar day of lectures and tours.
The scholarships are worth $2,500 each and will be awarded for academic
excellence as well as for an individual student's contribution to their
community. The scholarships will provide the opportunity for students
from regional Australia to live in Canberra and study in the Faculty of
Arts at The Australian National University from 2003.
"There are so many talented students who live in the regional areas
of Victoria and New South Wales. I hope these scholarships will make the
difference for these young people and attract them to come to Canberra
for their tertiary education," said Professor Adam Shoemaker, Dean
of the Faculty of Arts.
Application form will be available from 1 July 2002 at website or through
the Arts Faculty Office.
