Canberra unis join forces to promote ACT education

The heads of six ACT tertiary institutions will sign a Memorandum of Understanding next Tuesday 11 June for the joint marketing of Canberra Open Day for the next five years.

Canberra Open Day is organised by a unique consortium of tertiary institutions that have joined together to showcase the educational opportunities available in the ACT. More than 10,000 people are expected to visit the institutions involved in the combined Canberra Open Day in August this year.

The MOU will be signed by Professor Ian Chubb, Vice-Chancellor of The Australian National University; Professor Roger Dean, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra; Mr Peter Veenker, Chief Executive and Director of the Canberra Institute of Technology; Air Commodore Julie Hammer, Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA); Professor Robert King, Rector of the ADFA; Professor Michael Conlin, Chief Executive and Dean of the Australian International Hotel School; and Associate Professor Peter Camilleri, Rector of the Australian Catholic University.

Professor Ian Chubb, Vice-Chancellor of The Australian National University said the Canberra Open Day was not just an opportunity showcase the individual features of the universities but also to promote Canberra as a world-class education destination.

"We want to promote Canberra as a great place to live and study," Professor Chubb said. "Canberra should be acknowledged for its extraordinary learning environment and intellectual muscle. The work done in the ACT enriches the rest of Australia and the Asia Pacific region with excellent graduates. The quality of the ACT's tertiary institutions and the Canberra lifestyle are the key messages we want to get across."

Tim Beckett, Director of Student Recruitment and International Education at the ANU said Open Days were recognised as a key source of information for students considering tertiary study. "Having all the ACT tertiary institutions working together gives us the ability to market ourselves effectively to the region, interstate and internationally," he said.
