New ANU Business School Head

The Australian National University (ANU) has appointed Professor Gary Monroe as the new Head of its School of Business and Information Management.

Professor Monroe, who is Australian President of the Accounting Association of Australia and New Zealand (AAANZ), is coordinating a major study into the future of accounting and finance education in Australia.

The research is funded by CPA Australia and aims to identify issues universities face in maintaining academic standards while experiencing funding shortfalls. It is being conducted in collaboration with ANU colleague, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, Professor Tim Brailsford, and LaTrobe University's Professor Kim Langfield-Smith.

Professor Monroe said there is a critical shortage of new staff members in accounting and finance across Australia.

“Most universities in Australia have several positions vacant in the Schools of Accounting and Finance, Professor Monroe said. Without appropriate action on this matter, the business community will find itself without a sufficient supply of accounting and finance graduates to meet their needs.”

Professor Monroe says the research will bring a national focus to his role at the ANU.

“As National President of the AAANZ, I will combine advocacy for Australia's accounting academics with my teaching and research duties.”

Professor Monroe specialises in research and teaching on auditing, especially the areas of auditor judgement and the economics of auditing.

Professor Monroe was previously Head of Edith Cowan University's Accounting Department.

Professor Monroe’s name is familiar to accountants throughout Australia as principal of the consulting firm Monroe Topple & Associates, which develops and publishes accounting education materials.
