Land Sea City: Joe Furlonger

Deputy Director of Sothebys Australia, Mr Geoffrey Cassidy, will officially open the exhibition Land Sea City: Joe Furlonger with the artist on Wednesday 5 June 2002 at 6pm at The Australian National University Drill Hall Gallery.

Land Sea City brings together large-scale canvases, ink drawings, artist books, ceramics and a suite of prints. Joe Furlonger was awarded the Moet & Chandon Fellowship in 1988 and since 1992 his work has consistently been short-listed in the Archibald and Sulman Prizes at the Art Gallery of NSW.

In Land Sea City, Furlonger investigates and juxtaposes three elements of the Australian landscape - the vast open plains of Moree, the deep blue waters of Moreton Bay and the busy, congested streets of Sydney.

Furlonger observes the aesthetic potential of familiar, ordinary environments; the ocean, the rugged landscape, urban landmarks, the beach, fishermen and sunbathers.

In Land Sea City, Furlonger aims to articulate his sensory impressions of the world around him, exploring the possibilities posed by colour and line and reinvents landscape. He achieves this with a balance between immediacy and formal control within the composition. His distinct, bold sense of colour and individual confidence of line combine to create an alternative, lively interpretation of his subject matter.

The exhibition will be open to the public from Friday 31 May 2002 and continue until 30 June 2002. Joe Furlonger will give a public floor talk on his art on Thursday 6 June 2002 at 12 noon.
