I am woman, hear me draw
Well known Australian feminist cartoonist and writer, Judy Horacek, will
deliver the 14th Pamela Denoon Lecture, the highlight of International
Women's Day in Canberra, tonight at the ANU.
During the lecture, given in previous years by such prominent women as
Julie McCrossin, Pat O'Shane and Justice Elizabeth Evatt, Judy will show
cartoons and talk about the ways of the world and ways of trying to make
it a better place.
Judy's work is often concerned with feminism, the environment and social
justice issues and her most recent books include Women with Altitude,
Lost in Space and If the Fruit Fits.
"I believe that sometimes life is like making a huge fragile construction,"
Judy said.
"It's an incredibly delicate balancing act trying to live a life
that has integrity and meaning in a world that is so complex and chaotic.
And the trouble with incredibly delicate balancing acts is that they always
seem like they can collapse at any minute.
"I haven't worked out the answers either, but having a laugh together
is definitely a good beginning," Judy said.
Judy's lecture is being held as part of the Toyota - ANU Public Lecture
Series and is sponsored by University House.
The Pamela Denoon Lecture was inaugurated in 1989 as a tribute to the
memory of Pamela Denoon and as a reminder that the gains that have been
made by women over the years have only been possible because of the enormous
dedication of women like Pamela.
The Lecture is one of the key activities of the Canberra-based celebrations
for International Women's Day and has attracted a regular audience of
200 since its establishment.
