Professor Tim Brown has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science
at The Australian National University. He is currently Professor of Statistics
and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University

Announcing the appointment today, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb

Brown's outstanding international reputation to lead its Faculty of Science.
"The Faculty of Science is a major national academic centre for teaching
the core enabling disciplines and its staff have impressive international

commitment to providing undergraduate and postgraduate students with unparalleled
learning opportunities through the research and teaching links provided
through ANU's National Institute of Science.*
"Professor Brown will have a major role in developing those links."
Professor Brown has an honours degree in science from Monash University

He will join the University in early 2002.
* The Australian National University's 11 National Institutes enable
researchers, teachers and students working in broad academic theme areas
across the University to take new collaborative approaches to research,
teaching and learning. The National Institutes demonstrate the extraordinary
breadth and depth of scholarly activity in the University. By covering
virtually every aspect of the University's academic endeavour, they are
creating a superb teaching and research environment. Staff join Institutes
that best fits their professional interests and expertise and may be members
of more than one Institute.
The National Institute of Science combines academic staff from all the
University's science research schools and the Faculty of Science to provide
Australia's strongest groupings in the enabling sciences of physics, chemistry,
astronomy and the earth sciences, and mathematics, ensuring ANU's leading-edge
capabilities both in research and teaching.
