New Dean of Science appointed

Professor Tim Brown has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science at The Australian National University. He is currently Professor of Statistics and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne.

Announcing the appointment today, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said the national university was delighted to have an academic of Professor Brown's outstanding international reputation to lead its Faculty of Science.

"The Faculty of Science is a major national academic centre for teaching the core enabling disciplines and its staff have impressive international research records," Professor Chubb said. "It is a key element in the University's commitment to providing undergraduate and postgraduate students with unparalleled learning opportunities through the research and teaching links provided through ANU's National Institute of Science.*

"Professor Brown will have a major role in developing those links." Professor Brown has an honours degree in science from Monash University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Cambridge University. He has held teaching and research positions in numerous Australian and international universities, has been widely published, and has been an invited lecturer at a number of international academic conferences. He has extensive research and consulting experience.

He will join the University in early 2002.
