Bright young things Oxford-bound
Nine nervous candidates are awaiting the announcement of the 2002 Rhodes
Scholarships. The announcement of the successful candidates will take
place tomorrow at 3.30pm in the Drawing Room, University House, Balmain
Crescent, ANU.
The announcement of the 2002 Rhodes Scholarships for Australia at Large
will immediately follow interviews of the candidates by the Selection
Committee.

Admission to Oxford is extremely competitive and the competition to win
a scholarship is fierce. The 2002 Australian candidates are of an extremely
high standard.
This year there are nine candidates nominated by the selection committees
from the six states and territories for the Australia at Large Scholarships.
The two year scholarships are tenable at Oxford University. The Rhodes
Trust offers nine Rhodes Scholarships annually, one for each state and
three for Australia at large. The scholarships are internationally prestigious
and offer the winners fully paid fees, a personal stipend and travelling
expenses. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 24 years.
The 2002 candidates are Ingrid Barnsley (NSW), Stephen Daley (QLD), Melanie
Howard (TAS), Benjamin Juratowitch (QLD), Alexander Mair (SA), James McLaren
(VIC), Thomas Smith (SA), Fraser Thompson (VIC) and Rebecca Watson (WA).
The ACT candidate Anthea Roberts has withdrawn.
