ANU Photonics degrees light the way
Two new degrees in Photonics will be offered by The Australian National
University in 2002. ACT Chief Minister Gary Humphries and ANU Deputy Vice
Chancellor Professor John Richards will officially launch the new teaching
program at the Regatta Point Canberra Business Promotion Centre at 10:30am
on Thursday 20 September.
"Photonics is the generic term used to describe technologies involving
the replacement of electrons with photons," Dr. David McClelland, Head
of the ANU Physics Department said. " In the future it may be possible
to use light to replace electricity in many situations, for example: communication,
time keeping, surgery, machining, sensing, ranging and even perhaps one
day, computing."
The Bachelor of Photonics is a three year degree coordinated and taught
by the Physics Department in the Faculty of Science at the ANU. Future
students will have the option of proceeding to a fourth year Bachelor
of Science Honours degree. The Bachelor of Engineering (Photonic Systems)
is a 4 year fully accredited degree administered by the Department of
Physics and the Department of Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering
and Information Technology.
"The ANU has always had a strong focus on optics, laser and photonics
research, Professor Hans Bachor, the Photonics Program Coordinator said.
"There are many groups on campus with photonics expertise who will be
part of the teaching program. The degrees have been designed in consultation
with a number of industry partners to ensure they are relevant to the
growing technology sector."
" Photonics is considered the industry for the 21st century, " ANU Deputy
Vice Chancellor Professor Richards said. "ANU is internationally renowned
for being the Australian university with the largest and broadest research
activity in photonics in Australia. The two degrees from the ANU will
provide graduates with the expertise to be leaders in the cutting edge
of the photonics industry."
