National centre of light and lasers

Announced today, leading ANU researchers will help establish a national photonics centre in Canberra, lending their expertise to boost Australia's role in this world growth industry.

The ACT Government will launch the ACT Photonics Strategy today, and announce the new Photonics Institute, to be based in Canberra. The Institute will offer training and education programs, with experts advising the local industry on how to gain a competitive advantage across global markets.

Photonics is the technology of generating and harnessing light. It has applications in many areas, from telecommunications to laser eye surgery. Currently Australia has about 1.2% of the world market for photonic products for the telecommunications sector. Whilst growth of this industry has recently slowed from the dizzying levels of twelve months ago, sustained growth of 20-30% is still anticipated through the current slump.

Professor Barry Luther-Davies is head of the ANU's Laser Physics Centre, which has been researching fundamental, strategic and applied laser-based research for 30 years. He is the Research Director of the Australian Photonics Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) which was responsible for developing the Photonics Institute to be located in Canberra as a result of the strong support provided by the ACT Government.

Professor Luther-Davies says ANU staff have the know-how to successfully develop and commercialise photonics technology as well as the expertise to lead in educating the new breed of technologists for the industry.

"Right now, we are working on two major start-up projects, creating local companies who are targeting a share of the multi-billion dollar international market. In addition we have established new degree courses in Photonics at the ANU to meet the shortage of adequately trained scientists and engineers."

"It's a great opportunity for the ANU, and for Australian Photonics, which is cementing itself as a major player in the international photonics arena," said Professor Luther-Davies.
