Welcome to new Federal education minister
ANU has welcomed the appointment of Dr Brendan Nelson to the new Federal
Cabinet post of Minister for Education, Training and Science.
Professor Ian Chubb, ANU's Vice-Chancellor, said he looked forward to
working with Dr Nelson on the full range of education issues, especially
the establishment of the University's new medical school.
Professor Chubb said he also welcomed Mr Peter McGauran as the Minister
for Science.
"Dr Nelson and Mr McGauran are aware of the special national role
of ANU in science research and in teaching and I am sure that we will
have very cooperative and productive working relationships with them,"
Professor Chubb said.
"I am especially pleased that the Prime Minister has retained education
as a Cabinet-rank ministry and that science will in this way be represented
at the Cabinet table.
"Both are significant national policy areas that are important to
the continuing development of Australia's economy and its competitive
place in the world."
Professor Chubb said the University wished the previous Minister for Education,
Dr Kemp, well in his new responsibilities as Minister for the Environment.
ANU looked forward to working with Dr Kemp on issues related to research
and teaching on the environment, which were a particular strengths of
the University recently recognized by the formation of its National Institute
for the Environment.
