New deans to lead Arts and Engineering/IT
Australia's national university has appointed new Deans
for its Faculties of Arts and Engineering/Information Technology.
Professor John Patrick Baird will commence work as
the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering
and Information Technology, on Monday (April 9). He leaves the
University of New South Wales after nine years as Head of Aerospace and
Mechanical Engineering at the University College, Australian Defence Force
Academy.
Professor Adam Shoemaker will take over as the Dean
of the Faculty of Arts
in July. The Canadian-born academic from the Queensland University of
Technology comes to Canberra with more than 20 years experience in cross-cultural
and Australian studies, particularly Aboriginal literature.
The two appointments were made under a new competitive
selection process introduced after a review of the ANU's Faculties in
1999. ANU Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Richards, said the two
new Deans would bring a wealth of national and international experience
and knowledge to the University. He said their appointments continued
the University's commitment to quality teaching and research and excellence
in leadership and management.
Professor Baird's experience in academic management includes
developing new and innovative degree programs in aeronautical engineering
and establishing strong links with industry and other client groups with
an interest in engineering curricula.
"I'm interested in developing techniques that teach engineering
concepts rather than mathematical 'recipes'. Students can better handle
mathematical processes once they understand the basic engineering concepts,"
said Professor Baird. "This creates animated and interactive classes,
where students strive to learn, and enjoy themselves."
Professor Shoemaker will leave his position as Pro Vice-Chancellor
(Northern Corridor Development) at QUT, where he is responsible for encouraging
and managing change. He has more than 15 years of senior management experience
in the higher education sector, in the diplomatic arena and in public
affairs.
"I am delighted to take on the position with the ANU's
Faculty of Arts," Professor Shoemaker said. "This job allows me to bring
together my community skills, my international studies and experience,
and my passion for all aspects of the arts."
