Dean of medical school appointed

Professor Paul Gatenby is to become Dean of the new medical school at The Australian National University. Professor Gatenby is Dean of the University of Sydney's Clinical School at Canberra Hospital.

Announcing the appointment today, ANU's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Chubb, said the University was delighted a medical educator of Professor Gatenby's distinction would take charge of the planning, curriculum development, staff and student selection, and management of the new school.

ANU's medical school, which will provide an innovative undergraduate curriculum with a rural and community focus, will take its first graduate-entry students in 2004.
"This school will deliver a curriculum that is consistent with contemporary needs in medical care and which reflects the national role of the University," Professor Chubb said.

"Professor Gatenby's role will be crucial in delivering these outcomes and his experience will ensure we can do something different in medical education while maintaining the high standards set by our counterparts in other Australian universities."
ANU's medical school, which will have 60 commencing students, will involve the Canberra Hospital, the University of Canberra, staff of the ACT Health Service and other resources in Canberra and the Southern NSW region.

The school will generate major health benefits and enhanced rural health services throughout Australia, especially in South East NSW.
A brief biography of Professor Gatenby is attached.
