Dr Jose Ramos Horta speaks of challenges and opportunities
Nobel Prize winner Dr Jose Ramos Horta will this week present a public
lecture on challenges and opportunities that face East Timor this year
and in the future. Dr Horta is responsible for external affairs as a member
of the transitional government and has been at the centre of developments
in East Timor.
The past two years have been a time of great change for East Timor. Since
the mayhem in September 1999, East Timor has been under United Nations
jurisdiction.
On 30 August, the East Timorese will elect a constituent assembly that
will draft East Timor's constitution and establish a future form of government.
East Timor is facing a difficult future. It is one of the poorest nations
on Earth, its infrastructure was almost completely destroyed in 1999 and
much of its bureaucratic and commercial expertise was lost. Its timetable
for transition to independence is ambitious.
This presentation is part of the ANU's
