Children with diabetes visit to ANU labs
Children with diabetes and their families will be visiting the John Curtin
School of Medical Research on Wednesday (10 October, 2001) to see the
latest research in the battle against diabetes and enjoy a celebration
party.
The event provides an opportunity for children with Type 1 diabetes (plus
family and friends) to find out more about the research at The Australian
National University in order to improve their lives and develop a cure
for juvenile diabetes.
Children and their families are coming from across Canberra, and from
as far away as Wagga and Tumut. As well as the opportunity to visit the
labs, there will also be lots of fun activities, including face painting
and a Tug of War between the researchers and the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation.
As part of the fun, the children will help decorate the lab coats being
worn by the walkers from the School taking part in the JDRF "Walk
to Cure Diabetes" on 21 October. Wearing lab coats hand printed by
the children, the Curtin Raisers team (with 60 participants) is aiming
to raise at least $1,000 towards for this great cause.
The event will also celebrate the grants and financial support received
by the John Curtin School of Medical Research from the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation. In particular the most recent grant of $3.3 million
to Professor
Chris Goodnow's team for research on the fundamental mechanism of
Type 1 diabetes.
Two special guests at the event will be: netballer Kim Purcell and swimmer
Ray Hass.
