ANU tops Federation Fellowships list
The Australian National University won more of the prestigious Federation
Fellowships announced today than any other university. ANU will have four
Federation Fellows. The Fellowships were announced by the Prime Minister,
Mr Howard, at a special ceremony at Parliament House today.
Three of the current staff in the University's Institute of Advanced
Studies have been awarded $1.125 million Fellowships and a fourth researcher,
now at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, will join the Institute
as a Federation Fellow. ANU's Federation Fellows are:
· Professor John Braithwaite, Research School of Social Sciences Project:
Restorative justice and responsive regulation
· Professor Mike Dopita, Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics
Project: The epoch of galaxy formation · Professor Gottfried Otting, to
join the Research School of Chemistry Project: New methods for structural
biology in solution
· Professor Mandayam Srinivasan, Research School of Biological Sciences
Project: Honeybee vision and navigation, and applications to robotics
ANU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)
Professor Frank Jackson, said today that the University would ensure
that the new Federation Fellows have the best possible research environment
so that to benefit to Australia's research effort was maximised.
"Our university, along with other research-intensive universities in
Australia, has been working very hard to hold onto our research stars
and to attract new research leaders," he said. "This program will be of
major assistance."
