Five hundred students 'Explore Arts' at the ANU
Hundreds of senior students from 40 Victorian, New South Wales and ACT
schools, will converge on The Australian National University this Friday
3 August, for the inaugural "Explore
Arts" day.
The day is an opportunity for potential students to come and see first
hand what's available in the ANU's largest Faculty. "Students can come
and learn all about the career skills and employment prospects that result
from an Arts degree," Professor Adam Shoemaker, Dean of the Faculty of
Arts said.
"Many teenagers who are about to make important decisions about their
future careers, remain unaware of precisely where an Arts degree can take
them. We hope this innovative program will help educate the students about
the incredibly diverse range of career options available in the Faculty
of Arts."
The innovative program will include a series of special mini-lectures,
which will expose students to the reality of university life. Academics
from humanities, social sciences, language studies, archaeology and anthropology
will conduct the lectures. Topics include globalisation, philosophy and
sex and violence in American television.
"We think it's important for students to experience life on campus. Instead
of just conducting guided tours around the university, 'Explore Arts'
enables students to experience real lectures and to be involved in student
forums," Professor Shoemaker said.
During the day there will also be WebSports at the Library and a careers
seminar. "These young people are making major decisions, so we thought
a careers seminar would help to clarify how an Arts degree at Australia's
National University can put their future in focus."
