Overseas students graduate from campus they have never seen

In an ANU first, nearly 80 Chinese executives will graduate at The Australian National University from a locally-developed course, taught off-shore in a foreign language. A total of 78 participants including some high-profile telecommunications executives will travel to Canberra from China for the Master of International Management graduation ceremony at Llewellyn Hall on Friday 20 April, 2001.

The ANU's National Graduate School of Management began teaching a post-graduate "mini-MBA" in China under a unique deal with telecommunications giant Ericsson (China) in 1998. A year later the program was extended to allow participants to articulate into the Master of International Management (MIM)

"The course is a real success story for the NGSM, particularly in the face of tough competition inside China," NGSM Executive Director Professor Mark Dodgson said. "We are proud the model has become a market standard for a number of international programs which have followed."

Telecommunications is recognised as a major growth area within the Chinese economy. "The linkages created through this course with high level executives in Ericsson and their clients will have a lasting and positive effect for Australia and the ANU," Professor Dodgson said.

The course is not simply a collaboration with a Chinese partner institution, but a program run specifically for Ericsson and its clients by the ANU. Classes were held in Mandarin at the Ericsson China Academy, Beijing with full control over content and academic quality in the hands of ANU staff.

The Master of International Management (MIM) program is worth almost $1.5 million dollars a year to the National Graduate School of Management.
