Distinguished alumni join ANU Endowment Board
Mr Tony Hartnell AM and Mr Philip Holt AM two distinguished alumni of
The Australian National University have been appointed to the Board of
Governors of the Universitys Endowment for Excellence.
Announcing the appointments, Vice-Chancellor Professor Deane Terrell said
the two distinguished alumni would strengthen the Endowment for Excellence,
which continues to play an increasing role in the University.
Mr Tony Hartnell is
a partner in the Sydney law firm Atanaskovic Hartnell. He has BEc/LLB
(Hons) degrees ('64/71) and also holds an LLM from George Washington University.
He is a senior corporate lawyer and company director. Mr Hartnell was
a former Chairman of the National Companies and Securities Commission
and of the Australian Securities Commission. He was appointed a Member
of the Order of Australia in 1994.
Mr Philip Holt is
Managing Director of Australian Business Limited, formerly the Chamber
of Manufacturers. He is a LLB graduate (1975). Earlier, he was NSW Commissioner
for Consumer Affairs and a senior officer in the Trade Practices Commission.
He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1998.
Other members of the
Board of Governors are: Mr Ian Grigg AM, President; Mr Tony Ayers AC;
Ms Carol Austin; Professor Peter Baume AO, Chancellor; Dr Annabelle Bennett
SC, Pro-Chancellor; Senator Margaret Reid; Professor Deane Terrell, Vice-Chancellor
and Mr Matthew Tinning, representing the student bodies.
The Vice-Chancellor also paid tribute to the valuable contribution of
Dr Rod Eddington, the former Executive Chairman of Ansett Australia who
resigned following his recent appointment as CEO of British Airways.
The ANU Endowment
for Excellence was established in 1996, the Universitys 50th Anniversary
Year, to strengthen its financial independence. It is a body of funds
that will be preserved in perpetuity, with the interest generated available
to support important academic activities of the University.
