Professor Elizabeth DeanePro Vice-Chancellor (Students) BSc(Hons), PhD USyd Professor Elizabeth Deane is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) at The Australian National University. Professor Deane has held many academic leadership positions over the past 20 years, including Foundation Head of Department of Biological Sciences; Head of School of Sciences and Interim Dean of College of Science and Technology at the University of Western Sydney (1989 – 2000) and Dean of Division of Environmental and Life Sciences at Macquarie University, Sydney (2000 – 2008). In these positions she initiated and led the development of a number of educational programs, including the BSc (Biological Sciences), MClinical Sciences, MReproductive Medicine, BLiberal Studies all at UWS and the BHealth, the Masters in Biotechnology and MBiotech/MCommerce (International Business) the MScience Education and MWildlife and Habitat Management, all at Macquarie University. Professor Deane has been and is a member of a number of Boards, including Access Macquarie, the commercialisation arm of Macquarie University; the DEST CRC Committee and a member of its Communications Sub-Committee; Biomed North, a consortium aimed at increasing the interface between university and medical research and industry to deliver commercial outcomes; the Board of Governors of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation. She was also an active member of the Australian Council of Deans of Science Executive until 2008. Professor Deane, who holds a PhD (1981) and a Bachelor of Science (Hons) (1975) from the University Sydney, has a research interest in immune research and marsupial immunology, particularly in the areas of health, disease in native animals and social perspectives of interactions with wildlife. She has also undertaken research and published in the area of University Management and women and research in Universities.
