Student Involvement Student Exchange with IARU PartnersBoth undergraduate and graduate student exchange opportunities exist with National University of Singapore (NUS), University of Copenhagen and ETH Zurich. We hope that this arrangement will be extended to include Peking and Tokyo in the near future. Applicants wishing to study as an exchange student at an IARU partner university should apply through the ANU Student Exchange Program (ANUEP). Please refer to the Student Exchange website for more information about eligibility and the nomination process. Undergraduate exchange students travelling to IARU partners will receive a contribution towards travel costs at a rate adjusted periodically to take into account changing airfare costs. Higher Degree Research Student Visits to IARU PartnersHigher degree research (HDR) students are able to independently arrange a research visit to an IARU partner using existing networks. HDR students will be considered visitors at the IARU partner but not “exchange students”. The Vice Chancellor has made available travel grants (ANU travel grant) to enable HDR students to undertake a period of study at an overseas institution. To access the ANU travel grant, applicants must have completed one year full-time (or equivalent) of their candidature. Research students approved to spend time at an IARU partner may also apply for funding through the ANU-IARU Travel Grant. The ANU-IARU Travel Grant provides reimbursement up to a maximum amount, as a contribution towards a return economy airfare to the closest major international airport to the IARU partner university. Where visits are planned to multiple universities, including to non-IARU partner universities, the amount reimbursed will be equivalent to a return economy airfare to the IARU partner university to be visited, up to the maximum amount. In 2009, the maximum amount is $3000 for students travelling to IARU partners in Europe or US, and $2000 for students travelling to IARU partners in Asia. Under the 2009 guidelines, additional funding of $1000 is also available for students spending longer than three months at an IARU partner institution. To be eligible to receive an ANU-IARU Travel Grant, students must: - be undertaking study at Graduate level, either by coursework or research; and
Demonstrate that: - the visit to the IARU Partner University is central to the objectives of the student’s travel;
- the travel has been approved by the student’s supervisor, department head and college dean; and
- supervisory arrangements and status of student at host university has been clarified in writing.
Before applying, please read the ANU-IARU Grant Guidelines for Graduate Students (PDF, 106K) HDR Students applying for the ANU-IARU Travel Grant should forward their completed ANU Travel Grant application form to: ATTN: Tim Mansfield International Development Office Division of Registrar and Student Services 26 Balmain Cres. IARU Global Summer ProgramThe IARU Global Summer Program (GSP) provides opportunities for students from member universities to take part in intensive short courses coinciding with the northern hemisphere summer break. The 2009 IARU GSP offers courses across a range of disciplines for 4-5 weeks between June and August 2009. Applications for the 2009 GSP have now closed. Course information and an application form for the 2010 program will be available online at www.iaruni.org/gsp in early 2010. Information regarding eligibility criteria and financial support for ANU students is available here IARU Summer Internships
IARU Summer Internships are a new opportunity for students to work on a research project at a leading research university this summer, whilst experiencing a different country. You will be fully integrated into a research team, and together, you will analyse some of the greatest challenges facing academics in their field of study.
You will also live for two months in a foreign country. In 2009 each host university – NUS and Oxford – are offering four summer opportunities in total. Applications for the 2009 IARU Summer Internships opportunities have now closed. Information about the 2010 internships program will be available in early 2010 at www.iaruni.org/internships.
IARU Student Sustainability Fellowships As part of the IARU Campus Sustainability Program, the Sustainability Offices at participating institutions have developed a Sustainability Fellowship Program during the northern hemisphere summer break. Over a six week period coinciding with the northern hemisphere summer, students spend time at an IARU partner university, working closely with professionals to support campus sustainability initiatives. Project topics range from energy conservation, transport and waste reduction to student outreach and community engagement. Students live in campus housing and work in the university’s sustainability office for the duration of the program. The internship offers a stipend and paid travel expenses. In 2009, ANUgreen sent three students to IARU partner institutions.
