1. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS1.1 Can I apply to more than one course? Yes. If you wish to apply to more than one course, you must do so in a separate application form. If you are submitting multiple application forms, please send all applications in a single email to iaru.gsp@anu.edu.au. 1.2 Can I include preferences in my choice of courses? No. While applicants are welcome to submit applications to more than one course, you should consider applying only for those courses that you feel strongly about and that best reflect your academic needs and interests.
1.3 What supporting documentation, eg references, will I need to provide with my application? At the time of applying, you only need to complete the application form to be considered. If you are successfully nominated, some host universities may ask you to provide additional information, however, please do not submit any further information until requested. (Details about the type of additional information that may be requested are on the front page of the IARU GSP Application Form).
1.4 When does the GSP application period close? (added 29 January) The GSP application period for ANU students closes at 5.00pm Canberra time, Friday 6 March 2009.
1.5 How do ANU students apply to the ANU GSP course? (added 19 February) If you are interested in applying for the GSP Course at ANU (International Environmental Policy) you must apply as you would any other GSP course (ie. through the GSP application form). For information about the financial support offered to ANU students participating in the ANU course, please see FAQ 3.2.
2. ELIGIBILITY2.1 Is there a Grade Point Average (GPA) cut-off for eligibility? Yes. Given the intense and academically rigorous nature of the GSP, to be eligible to apply ANU applicants must have achieved at least a Credit average (GPA of 5) across their entire period of study. 2.2 How is my GPA calculated? Your GPA is calculated by assigning points to each result, ie. High Distinction=7, Distinction=6, Credit=5, Pass=4, Failure=0, adding these points together and dividing by the number of results. 2.3 I participated in the IARU GSP in 2008, am I eligible to apply again in 2009? No. In the interests of providing a wide range of students with an opportunity to participate in the program, students will not be eligible to apply to participate a second time. If you were involved in the GSP in 2008, and are interested in volunteering your time to assist with the GSP course run at ANU in 2009, please contact the IARU GSP Coordinator (iaru.gsp@anu.edu.au) 2.4 If I applied to a GSP course in 2008 and was not accepted, can I reapply in 2009? Yes. 2.5 I am a graduate student at ANU, am I eligible to apply? The GSP is aimed at senior undergraduate students; however, graduate students are eligible to apply. All graduate students must submit with their application a letter from their supervisor or course convenor stating that the course being applied for would be counted as 6 units of credit towards the program in which you are enrolled. 2.6 I am a first year graduate student at ANU, but my undergraduate study was completed at a different university, am I eligible to apply? Yes. You will need to provide with your application form a certified copy of your academic transcript from your previous institution. 2.7 I began my first year in Semester 2 2008 and will have completed my first year of university at the end of Semester 1 2009. Am I eligible to apply? No. Unfortunately, you will be ineligible to apply for the 2009 program. The ANU selection committee requires that you have completed at least one year full-time (or equivalent) at the point of applying. We would, however, welcome you to apply to the GSP in 2010. 2.8 I am an exchange student visiting ANU – am I eligible to apply? No. Students visiting ANU on exchange from non-IARU partners are not eligible to apply to the GSP. Students on exchange from IARU partner universities may be able to apply, but admission to the program would be through, and under the conditions of your home university, and with the prior approval of the Academic Advisor of the ANU Student Mobility Team.
2.9 I am a PhD student at ANU – am I eligible to apply? (added 26 February 2009) No. ANU Students participating in the IARU GSP are required to be able to take their selected course for credit. As there is no way for this to occur for PhD students, they are not eligible to apply.
3. FINANCIAL SUPPORT3.1 If I am selected to participate in a GSP course at an IARU partner, how much financial support will I receive from ANU? All students selected to participate in a GSP course at an IARU partner will be eligible to receive financial support from ANU, in the form of:

3.3 Where will I find information on what other costs I might have to cover? Does ANU’s financial support for accommodation component cover meals? Course information including expected costs for each course are available from the IARU GSP Website (External to the ANU website). As an ANU student you will receive an accommodation bursary, but if meals are not included by the host university in the accommodation costs then you will need to budget for this expenditure.
4. INTERUPTION TO ANU COURSES4.1 The GSP course that I wish to apply for conflicts with my exam period in semester one. Can I still participate? If you are successfully nominated to attend a GSP course, it will be your responsibility to ensure that your involvement in the program does not prevent your completion of required assessments for any semester one courses at ANU. Any potential conflicts with your exams should, in the first instance, be discussed with the relevant course advisor and/or lecturer(s) in your College. 4.2 The GSP course that I wish to apply for conflicts with the start of Semester two. Can I still participate? As the GSP coincides with the northern hemisphere’s summer holidays, a number of courses conflict with the beginning of Semester Two at ANU. If you are successfully nominated to attend a GSP course, it will be your responsibility to ensure that you have advised and received permission from your College to be absent from any courses that you are unable to attend due to your participation in the GSP.
5. SELECTION PROCESS5.1 What is the selection process? Is it only based on GPA? Are there any selection criteria that I can address in my application? The aim of the selection process is to select outstanding, well-rounded ambassadors for the ANU who have a consistent record of high academic achievement and a strong interest in their chosen course. A selection committee will assess applications based on GPA and Academic Transcript details, as well as the Statement of Purpose and Other Information sections of the application form. While there are no specific selection criteria, you should aim to include in your statements relevant information that best demonstrates and supports your reasons for wanting to participate on the course, what you hope to contribute to the course, and what you hope to get out of it. 5.2 How many ANU students will be selected for each course? ANU will be nominating up to 2 students for each GSP course. 5.3 When will I find out if I have been nominated or not? It is expected that all applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by early April 2009.
6. CREDIT6.1 Can I get credit for a GSP Course? Yes. If you are selected to participate in the GSP, you will be required to have enough room in your program to accommodate six units of credit for the course. If you are selected, the GSP Coordinator will contact your College on your behalf to confirm that you are in a position to claim credit from your participation. Please note that it will be your responsibility to make an application for credit on your return to ANU. 6.2 How much credit can I receive for a GSP Course? In principle, each GSP course will be worth 6 units of ANU Credit.
