RSC safety noted

Professor Ian Chubb (centre) congratulates RSC safety wardens (from left) Geoff Deeble, Chris Tomkins, Kevin Cooper, Lee Welling at the staff awards.

Staff who performed with bravery and dedication after the fire at the Research School of Chemistry (RSC) earlier this year were among those celebrated at a university-wide awards ceremony this month.

ANU employees who have achieved excellence or demonstrated years of dedication were honoured at the staff awards at University House.

Four RSC general staff received the rare Vice-Chancellor’s Special Award for protecting the safety of staff, students and facilities in the immediate aftermath of the fire in August.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Lawrence Cram said when announcing the prize that Kevin Cooper, Geoff Deeble, Chris Tomkins, and Lee Welling deserved special mention for their ‘exceptional’ efforts, and for ‘working tirelessly’ to return RSC to normal operations.

“I was surprised. I didn’t know such an award existed,” Mr Welling said, speaking on behalf of the group.

“It’s nice to get recognition, but then, responding to incidents like these is exactly what we’ve been trained to do.

“After the explosion, the evacuation went off without a hitch. We were so well prepared that everyone went into auto mode.”

Other awards presented to staff included innovation in IT on campus, excellence in service quality, 25 years’ service, and recognition of community outreach.
