HEALTH FOCUS
The University will co-host a new centre that will conduct research on the delivery of primary health care in Australia. The Menzies Centre for Public Health Policy and Practice will be based at ANU and the University of Sydney. The centre will also participate in higher degree research programs and host education and communication activities.
HUON ELECTED
The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has elected Dean of Graduate Students Professor Gail Huon as an APS Fellow. The society is the largest professional association for psychologists in Australia, representing 14,700 members. Professor Huon is one of only 170 APS members who have been named fellows to date.
SHORE SUCCESS
Adjunct Professor Greg Dening from the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research has been short-listed in the 2005 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards for his non-fiction book Beach Crossing: Voyaging across times, cultures and self. Current H.C. Coombs Creative Fellow Michael McGirr has also been nominated.
OPPOSITION OPINED
Prominent politicians from the past and present related their experiences of being in Opposition at a recent symposium hosted by the Political Science Program in the Research School of Social Sciences. Speakers included Senator John Falkner, former Senate president Margaret Reid, Member for Fraser Bob McMullan, and former MP Jim Carlton.
FILM PRIZE
Gary Kildea from the Ethnographic Film Laboratory at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies has won the major film prize from the Royal Anthropological Institute in the UK for his film Koriam’s Law and the dead who govern, made with Andrea Simon and anthropologist Andrew Lattas.
HIGH ADVICE
Faculty of Law lecturer Ben Wickham has been appointed Special Adviser to the Chief Justice of the High Court. Mr Wickham will take a three-year leave of absence to take up the newly created position, in which he will help the court to decide which appeal cases it should hear out of the hundreds of applications each year.
