Initiative planting seeds for future Newtons

A new cross-campus initiative in mathematical physics has been launched by Federal MP Gary Nairn and ANU Vice-Chancellor Ian Chubb.

The Educational Research Initiative in Mathematical Physics aims to strengthen
existing resources in the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, the Faculty of Science and the Mathematical Sciences Institute.

It will provide research training at the interface of mathematics and theoretical physics.

“The goal is to nurture brilliant theoretical minds – the Newton’s and Einstein’s of the future,” said Professor Vladimir Bazhanov from the Department of Theoretical Physics.

Mr Nairn applauded the initiative, saying that it often went unnoticed that many practical outcomes from research were based on fundamental research.

“It’s important to keep in mind that many practical outcomes don’t happen unless the theory’s right,” he said.

The initiative is aimed at attracting Australia’s top students, particularly those enrolled in programs such as the PhB.

It will include a new Major in Mathematical Physics to be offered in 2006, providing a venue for students in advanced theoretical topics such as string theory.
