A new shop-front in Union Court is destined to become the major information hub for students and newcomers to the University grounds.
The ANU Information Centre, which was opened this month by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb, will provide point-of-contact assistance to people who are investigating study options, preparing to enrol, or just visiting campus for the first time.
The centre is a joint initiative of Student Recruitment and International Education (SRIE) and Student and Academic Services (SAS). The University’s student association, ANUSA, and many sections of the ANU community also support the facility.
“The goal was to create a hub for information about ANU in a place where there is a lot of foot traffic,” SRIE Deputy Director Jenny Carlin said.
“Union Court is the perfect site for this, given that it is close to the city, and most students and staff visit the area regularly to use the shops and cafes.
“Our aim is for the ANU Information Centre to be an efficient drop-in point, providing speedy access to things like information and forms.”
Ms Carlin said the facility will also help people who are unfamiliar with the campus to find their way around, whether by providing maps, or as a base for guided tours.
“The University grounds are quite spread out; often staff aren’t familiar with those parts of the campus outside their immediate work areas," she said.
"Now, when asked for directions, staff members will be able to refer people to the information centre in cases where they can’t assist."
Staff from SRIE and SAS will be based at the centre during its opening hours between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. Personnel from other areas such as University Accommodation Services will provide services during peak periods.
The coordinator of the Student Information and Guidance Network (SIGN) will oversee the Information Centre’s operation on a day-to-day basis, and SIGN mentors will use the centre as a base. This program allows later-year students to offer support to newcomers, helping them to navigate aspects of university life.
