Health partnership possible

Epidemic control programs at ANU were in the spotlight again when the Chinese health minister visited the University during his tour of Australia late last month.

Minister Gao Qiang led a delegation of Chinese health officials to the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH), as China is preparing to strengthen its disease management strategies, including preparedness for pandemic influenza.

The visit came several weeks after another delegation of health officials from the Henan province was at NCEPH to be briefed on the Master of Applied Epidemiology (MAE) program.

MAE Acting Director Dr Mahomed Patel said the latest visit was positive, with Minister Gao expressing a desire to develop a partnership with the University to strengthen China’s disease control programs through workforce development, mathematical modelling to inform control strategies, and applied research.

“The strength of the MAE program continues to be a major drawcard, after NCEPH assisted the Chinese authorities to set up a similar program in 2001,” Dr Patel said.
