Slime time for students

Radhika Sukumar and Ankita Raturi from Canberra Girls' Grammar School prepare a Lego robot for the demolition derby during Archimedes Day.

ANU laboratories became theatres for robot wars and slime-making sessions recently as staff shared the fun side of science and engineering with over 130 local secondary students.

Archimedes Day, held on 8 September, is an annual event hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) and the Faculty of Science.

Workshops included ‘Mechatronic Mayhem’, in which students were asked to design and program small robots to compete in a demolition derby, and ‘Spooky Slime Chemistry’, in which participants replicated a chemical industry synthesis to create their own brand of goo.

“It’s important for young people to see that a career in science, mathematics, engineering or IT can be challenging and fulfilling,” Professor John Richards, the Director of the ANU Information Sciences and Engineering Institute, said.

“Many ANU staff know the exhilaration of experiencing a eureka moment. Thanks to Archimedes Day, we may have helped to inspire the people who will go on to make the discoveries and technologies of tomorrow.”

The outreach day was the culmination of a series of events designed to raise awareness about physics, mathematics, engineering and IT at ANU.

FEIT and the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering also hosted IT Week this month, which included a panel discussion from a range of experts on the prevalence of computer technology in modern culture.

The IT Week program at the National Museum of Australia also included demonstrations of the latest in laser technology and a public lecture on the development of computer vision.
