Tamir Yedidya says he prefers to photograph people. |
Staff and students were invited to submit their photographs illustrating an aspect of the University’s community by the office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (University Community).
The winners were announced at the inaugural Last Lecture event at University House last month. Their images of ANU landscapes, reflections, people and places will each adorn a month in the calendar, with three extras being used for end papers and the cover.
Pam De Winter took advantage of her work through the ANU casual employment office to look at the kinds of images that had been used on promotional material in the past. She discovered that there had been little exposure given to the urban spaces in Union Court.
“I was looking for something different – a different angle. I researched all the pamphlets going back to 1985 to see what had been done before.”
Where most pictures had tended to focus on buildings and monuments, Ms De Winter instead chose to highlight the texture and movement of overlapping posters and flyers. This striking photo was chosen for the calendar cover.
A dynamic scene also inspired finalist Tamir Yedidya, a PhD candidate in Information Engineering. His shot of some energetic spectators on Fellows Oval was picked for the inside of the calendar.
“It had some action, some movement. It’s more difficult to get a photo of people. Not everyone is happy to have their photo taken.”
Migeul Sommariva, an artist from Chile who has worked as part of the ANU gardens for six years, wowed the judges with his early morning snap of a metallic-moth sculpture.
“My advantage is that I arrive at work very early in the morning,” he said. “Other people are not wanting to come in so early when it’s cold and frosty.”
