Disciplines unite to tackle evolution
A new interdisciplinary centre focusing on evolution and ecology issues was launched at ANU on 20 October.
Tempo and Mode: Centre for Macroevolution and Macroecology is a virtual centre connecting biologists, geologists, palaeontologists, philosophers and other academics interested in the patterns and mechanisms of biodiversity generation and loss.
“We are interested in broad-scale patterns in evolution and ecology,” Dr Lindell Bromham from the School of Botany and Zoology said.
“Why are some lineages more species-rich than others? Does evolution select for ‘evolvability’? Why are some places more biodiverse than others? These are just some of the questions we’ll be discussing.”
The organisers hope that researchers from varied disciplines will develop a deeper appreciation of different approaches and a shared language through regular meetings. The centre will also host regular seminars and evolutionary theory reading groups.
