Prince Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, and his wife Princess Maxima of the Netherlands witnessed the Memorandum Of Understanding signing at ANU on 24 October.

The Australia-Netherlands Research Collaboration will identify specialist scholars, organise workshops and conferences, offer PhD scholarships in both countries and allow policy specialists to meet with Dutch and Australian researchers to discuss contemporary issues in Southeast Asia.

“ANU and the University of Leiden represent the pinnacle of Asian Studies teaching and research in the southern and northern hemispheres respectively. It will give the Australia-Netherlands relationship a focused, productive momentum,” the Dean of the Faculty of Asian Studies, Professor Rikki Kersten, said

The MOU was signed by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Chubb, and the Netherlands Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Niek van Zutphen, at the Drill Hall Gallery.

Experts from ANU briefed the royal couple on issues from terrorism and Islamic radicalism, politics, the economy and gender issues in Southeast Asia.
