ANU secondary studies programs challenge students

The opportunity for outstanding ACT secondary students to extend themselves received a boost this month as ANU welcomed the first participants in its secondary studies programs.

The ANU secondary studies programs offer Canberra’s secondary students the chance to undertake advanced courses in maths, physics and chemistry that can lead to an early offer to study at ANU and credit towards a degree at the University.

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope and ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb officially opened the ANU Secondary College, which will offer the advanced courses to students from ACT government colleges.

“ANU values its strong ties to the Canberra community. We’re proud to offer the ACT’s secondary students a taste of the university learning environment and the opportunity to extend themselves,” Professor Chubb said.

“The secondary studies programs will deepen the links between ANU and local secondary schools and colleges, and give students from across the ACT chance to interact with each other in a stimulating environment.

“The advanced courses will prepare them well for tertiary study, and, if they perform well, they’ll be rewarded for their hard work with an early offer for ANU and credit towards their degree.”

Professor Chubb said he believed the work the students undertook as part of the secondary studies program would have a positive impact on the work they do at their home colleges and schools.

The ANU Secondary College program for ACT government college students is an initiative of ANU and the ACT Government, who formed a Joint Working Party to develop the college concept and forge an implementation plan.

Students at non-government schools have access to similar advanced courses through the ANU College following discussions between ANU and the principals of non-government schools.

Towards the end of Year 12, students who successfully complete the secondary studies programs will receive an early offer of admission to ANU, and will earn credit equivalent to one semester course towards their degree at the University.

Students undertaking the ACT Year 12 Certificate will have their final results in the advanced courses meshed with their results from their home colleges. Results can also be included in UAI. Students undertaking the NSW Higher School Certificate will be able to have the course included in their HSC.
