Strengthening support for interdisciplinary projects and backing the next generation of researchers have been listed as key priorities by the two new Pro Vice-Chancellors at ANU.

The new executive positions have been created as part of a restructure in which the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Malcolm Gillies became Vice-President (Development), based in the US.

The head of the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies, Professor Will Steffen, has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), as has the current Executive Director of Humanities and Creative Arts at the Australian Research Council, Dr Mandy Thomas.

“It’s tremendously exciting for me to be returning to ANU at a time when the new College structure will be moving a world-class institution forward in new directions,” Dr Thomas said.

“I hope to bring to ANU an increased focus on the next generation of researchers, both in attracting the best graduate students and in developing the research capacity of early career researchers working in the institution.

“In addition, I am looking forward to supporting initiatives for women in research and in enhancing strategic partnerships both in the wider community and internationally.”

Professor Steffen said one of his priorities was to nurture more partnerships within the University itself.

“It’s important that we continue to bed down the college system and begin to reap the benefits in research synergies and enhanced integration of research and education that it can bring,” he said.

“However, it is also important that we continue to develop the interdisciplinary initiatives that span several colleges and that address important national priorities, such as Indigenous affairs and several key national and global environmental issues.

“We have outstanding disciplinary strengths at ANU and we have the potential to match them with equally powerful interdisciplinary endeavours. I am very much looking forward to contributing what I can to meeting these challenges.”

When announcing the appointments, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said Dr Thomas and Professor Steffen had proven track records in managing cross-disciplinary research and education.
