Simple truths shine at student speaking competition

A speech about the enduring human values of truth, peace and righteousness wowed the judges and audience members alike at an inter-College oratory competition.

Jacob Townsend delivers his speech.

Masters student Jacob Townsend from the ANU College of Asia & the Pacific was awarded first prize at the 12th Annual Lions Club Oratory Competition, held at the John Curtin School of Medical Research on 19 September.

He also won the people’s choice award for his address, which ranged from advice for treating baldness through to the continuity of values in human civilization.

“A lie stands on nothing. It is like a sheet waving eerily in the wind at night, always at risk of exposure as nothing more than a breath of air. The truth, by contrast, stands on its own support … it weathers through the full moral power of simple honesty,” Mr Townsend said.

The annual competition is run by the Lions Club to encourage young people to consider the basic human values of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence.

Other topics considered included the causes of terrorism, the cultural divide between the humanities and arts, and the state of liberalism in Australia.
