Millie Roonie from ANUgreen presents Dr Jeremy Weinman with a prize voucher for carpooling. |
ANUgreen held a ‘Share a ride to work day’ on Wednesday 26 July, inviting divisions to compete against one another for the most number of people signing up to the ANU carpool database.
Millie Rooney from ANUgreen said the response was very positive, with the total number of people registered climbing to over 200.
“We’re trying to reduce the environmental impact of cars, but we’re also trying to reduce the number of cars on campus. The congestion and parking can be a real hassle.
“If everyone carpooled only once a semester, the amount of fossil fuels used would be significantly reduced.”
As part of the promotion, ANUgreen awarded a $50 book voucher to an individual who signed up for carpooling on the day. The prize went to Dr Jeremy Weinman from the Research School of Biological Sciences.
“I’ve been registered for about a year now, but decided to update my details when I heard about the carpooling day,” Dr Weinman said.
“Even before the price of petrol rose dramatically, carpooling still seemed like a sensible idea. If nothing else, I hope this will encourage more people to look at the site and register.”
