The inventors of an innovative solar cell have been named overall winners in the ACT Sustainable Cities Awards for 2006.
Professor Andrew Blakers and Dr Klaus Webber from the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems at ANU led the team that developed Sliver® solar cells, a technology being commercialised by Origin Energy.
Judges of the environmental awards praised the solar team for creating a breakthrough technology that could potentially become a viable zero-emission alternative to traditional energy sources.
The researchers also won the Environmental Innovation Award.
The University’s environmental office was celebrated at the awards event, which was hosted by Keep Australia Beautiful.
ANUgreen won the Resource Efficiency Award for its IT recycling and furniture redistribution program, which has led to more than 4,100 computers being recycled since 2002.
